(Fitness Education).
The history of the establishment and development of physical education and sports in the United States in different historical periods is an important part of the general history of physical culture. The experience gained by them has significantly influenced the establishment and formation of modern sports, the development of existing systems of physical education in the world, and in Ukraine in particular. It is important to compare and analyze the historical experience of the development of physical culture and sports in the United States in order to use the acquired knowledge to improve and predict physical education in Ukraine. During the study it was established that the reform of school programs in physical education in the second half of the twentieth century was associated with changes in public life and sport in the United States. Gradually, the goal of the school program of physical education was reoriented from the formation of a high level of physical fitness of students (50-60's) to strengthening the health of students through the enjoyment of exercise and the formation of social competencies (70-90's). For the beginning of the 21st century, the growth of the status of Physical Education and sports in schools was characteristic. We believe that this is primarily due to the publication of large-scale studies in the United States that have shown the deterioration of the health of the American nation due to the prevalence of a sedentary lifestyle. The nation gradually became aware of the importance of teaching children to lead a healthy lifestyle and help them develop skills to follow in adulthood. The most famous approaches in physical education in the early 21st century in the United States were: "Movement Education", "Sports Education", "Fitness Education". In "Movement Education", attention was focused on mastering basic motor skills as a necessary prerequisite for physical activity throughout life. The basis of "Sports Education" was the acquisition of sportsmanship in selected sports, which can be practiced at any age. The “Fitness Education” approach aims to increase the level of physical fitness of students.
