It has been determined that the training of early childhood education specialists in Austria is carried out on the principles of a competency-based approach. Professional pedagogical colleges provide initial training for practitioners who receive professional education for the main practices working in early childhood centers, kindergartens, extracurricular institutions, and institutions for children with special educational needs. The specifics of admission to professional-technical colleges are disclosed. Applicants undergo an “aptitude test”, which assesses their ability, readiness, and capability for communication, critical thinking, creativity, and the development of creative abilities. The educational standards of Austria are characterized, created as normative standards (average level), encompassing general and professional competencies. The main competencies of professional training for preschool education specialists are analyzed: critical thinking, creativity, respect for multiculturalism, cooperation, and teamwork. It is argued and proven that critical thinking is a fundamental competency of national standards and a competence of the modern educator. The Austrian training system is based on the understanding of critical thinking as one of the interrelated “four Cs”: critical thinking, communication, cooperation, and creativity, as reflected in professional standards. Emphasis is placed on the interconnection of these processes rather than their subordination, revealing significant opportunities for preparing professionals for continuous, sustainable professional development. It is clarified that the training of future educators in Austria is a priority for colleges, specially organized classes, and additional courses. Higher education is taking its initial steps in this direction, as evidenced by the establishment of the first research departments at Austrian universities.
