In this work, a retrospective analysis of the concept of "musical-auditory representations" and its understanding at different times is carried out. The study of the historical-theoretical formation and development of the piano teaching method revealed that it is connected with the evolution of the piano as a musical instrument. It was found that the scientific and methodical thought of the past was directed not only to the improvement of the performance technique of pianists, but also to the education of bright and harmoniously developed musicians. Content analysis of their scientific and methodical works made it possible to reveal the goals and methods that enriched the theory and practice of piano teaching. Special tasks for the development of musical and auditory ideas can be applied at different stages of learning to play the piano. The proposed criteria, indicators and methods of evaluating musical and auditory perceptions are advisable to be used during the pedagogical diagnosis of students of non-formal music institutions in the conditions of learning to play various musical instruments, as well as for evaluating the musical achievements of students in reading and performing types of musical activities.
