In the article the research results of the health preservation skills formation are presented, the general level of pupils’ awareness of the field is defined and the role of physical exercises in the health preservation process is clarified. Nowadays the child health rate is essential as the future society development depends on the state of health of the younger generation. The results of various studies prove the existing tendency of child and teenage health rates decline in Ukraine. Recently the situation with children’s health is almost crucial: the rate of general diseases and the rate of certain organs and systems diseases are increasing. It has been proved that the health rate decline is connected with the problem of pupils’ lack of physical activity during the day. The lack of physical activity has a negative impact on the organism, leading to hypodynamia. This results in low levels of physical development and functionality of the younger generation and the reduction of their working capacity. Physical education and sport are able to compensate for the lack of activity, prevent the negative influence of hypodynamia, rationalize people’s lifestyles. The essential role in health preservation and formation belongs to the person himself, her lifestyle, her values, her aims which actualizes the problem of defining the level of pupils’ health preservation skills formation. In order to study the state of health, physical activity and formation of health preservation skills, we conducted a survey in the course of the first Ukrainian Physical Culture and Sports Olympiad, which was attended by fifty three (53) 11th grade pupils. The research results suggest that the majority of pupils have formed the inner need and skills for health preservation. Some peculiarities, noted while identifying health preservation skills, can be explained with the lack of knowledge of health formation and improvement, practical skills of physical exercises and mass sports, and, in some cases, irresponsible attitude to their own health.
