The article deals with the problem of formation and development of family medicine in Ukraine and manifestation of influence of experience of foreign countries on training of future medical doctors of pre-graduate and postgraduate stages. It is noted that the beginning of the training of family doctors in Europe takes from 90ies of the last century. Approximately in that period the first steps in the training of family doctors by retraining therapists and pediatricians in the postgraduate education system were also carried out in Ukraine. A discussion about the ways of resolving this problem was deployed on the pages of scientific journals. It was established that the vast majority of scientists offered to train family doctors through the system of postgraduate training, however, teachers of Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University insisted on training of a family doctor at the separate faculty of Medical University from the first year. Some scientists offered to train family doctors on the postgraduate stage of internship or magistracy. For some time, there was a discussion involving different approaches to the training of family doctors in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the USA and Canada.
According to the study, in the vast majority of states that are members of the European Union, family medicine is studied
at the stage of pre-graduate education (80per cent of countries). In 2/3 of these states almost all establishments of higher education practice postgraduate training in Family Medicine (the exception is Austria, Cyprus, Italy, Czech Republic, Germany, etc.).
In the USA future family doctors gain education under the program of four-year training and receive a bachelor’s degree.
Then they also continue the training on the four-year program of general vocational training in an establishment of higher
medical education. The next stage is a three-year internship in medical institutions.
